ARS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), located in Washington, D.C.

Research Project: Springhouse Run stream restoration project was completed in May of 2016. The project covers 5 acres and restored a natural stream back to its sloping banks and retaining ponds. This effort has been meant to provide a natural filtration system to a tributary of the Anacostia River. The opportunity allows a mentee to explore and research the development of the project after 7 years and analyze the successes and challenges of this project. The mentee will be asked to assist in developing a long-term management plan for Springhouse Run and a thorough assessment of the Plant Germplasm used in this project.
Learning Objectives: The research and training will involve a better understanding and analysis for long term strategies for a stream restoration project at the National Arboretum that has been in the ground for 10 years. The participant will learn native and exotic plant identification, the nuances and challenges in invasive species control, understanding the management of stream restoration with Fauna as well as Flora involved in the equation and a fundamental look at stream hydrology. All of this in a public garden atmosphere where education and signage is critical. It is the hope that after the participant's research they will be able to share their findings and experiences in order for us to be able to develop long term strategies for managing this challenging landscape.
As a result of this training, the participant will learn skills in all of the above but in addition they will have a better understanding of the impact of projects when the budget is tight and human resources are limited.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Summer/Fall 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for twelve weeks, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
