The U.S. Army Garrison Italy, Army Community Service Division is offering two internship opportunities involving facilitating and assessig comprehensive, coordinated, and responsive human health services that support readiness and resilience of Soldiers, civilian employees and their Families for all U.S. Army activities throughout Italy.
What will I be doing?
As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to contribute to professional and technical research projects for personnel intake and assessment.
Why should I apply?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will engage in various research activities, including:
- Contribute to the development and use of self-assessment, community assessment, and various measurement tools to identify trends, organizational needs and Army and unit demographic profiles
- Implement research studies to assess community social needs, and assist with utilizing research studies to provide continuing quality of life services to the entire community
- Utilize results to develop and plan delivery of social service programs, classes, and trainings to enhance community and social well-being
- Assess, analyze, and document results of impacts to community resiliency
- Conduct a community survey, compile and aggregate survey data, and analyze data.
- Present survey data findings, and offer actionable recommendations
Where will I be located? Livorno or Vincenza, Italy
What is the appointment length?
These appointments are twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by U.S. Army Garrison Italy. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USAG-Italy Army Community Service Division
The ACS Satellite Offices serve the local Army community in the areas of Family Advocacy, Mobilization and Deployment, Financial and Employment Readiness.
About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidates should hold or be currently pursuing an Associate's, Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences. The degree must have been received within 5 years of the appointment start date. U.S. military veterans who have been honorably discharged (or who have been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability) and who received a degree within ten years of the desired start date are also eligible.
Applicants must be able to obtain a CAC and have access to base at Camp Darby in Livorno, Italy or Vicenza, Italy (Ederle and Del Din).
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
- Experience in evaluating and counseling family, and quality of life issues.
- Knowledge of social services delivery systems concepts, principles, and theories relating to one or more of the social behavioral science fields
- Understanding the nature of how to gather information on a variety of quality-of-life problems/issues
- Ability to evaluate concerns and needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships.
