The Monterey Phoenix STEM Research Participation Program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is designed to attract talented high school, undergraduate and graduate students, and recent graduates to join ongoing research projects in science, technology, engineering and mathematics topic areas.

What will I be doing?

As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will have the opportunity to explore a federal career and gain a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent, and skills in a variety of settings.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to: engage in a variety of research activities, including:

  • Experiment with new techniques for conducting emergent behavior analysis 
  • Experiment with new techniques for conducting risk, cost, schedule, or system/process performance analyses
  • Publish new MP models on the Uses page of our website (https://nps.edu/mp)
  • Assist with coaching new MP learners during virtual immersion workshops, learning sprints, and internships
  • Help make an advanced system and software quality assurance tool accessible to many more users
  • Improve tutorials and documentation about MP
  • Contribute to Monterey Phoenix newsletter

What is the anticipated start date?

The Monterey Phoenix STEM Research Participation Program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a 12-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by NPS. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

The mission of the Naval Postgraduate School provides relevant and advanced educational andresearch experience to commissioned officers of the Naval Service to increase their combat effectiveness and enhance the security of the United States. In support of this mission as well as to sustain academic excellence, NPS and the U.S. Department of the Navy (DoN) foster and encourage an academic program of relevant and meritorious naval research. About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The Monterey Phoenix Research Participation Program at the Naval Postgraduate School is open to all students and recent graduates who meet the following qualifications:

U.S. Citizens at the time of application.
Individuals 16 years of age or older by the application deadline.
Meet one of the following conditions:

  • Currently enrolled as a high school student
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution of higher education pursuing a degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline, or have interest or experience in a STEM field.
  • Have completed an undergraduate (B.A., B.S. or equivalent) or graduate (M.S., DVM, Ph.D., MD or equivalent) degree within three years of the application deadline in a STEM discipline or have interest or experience in a STEM field.

General Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with office automation software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  
  • Able to work independently on assigned tasks in between meetings with supervisor. 
  • Able to work virtually from your location using online collaboration and meeting tools such as Microsoft Teams (has computer and Internet access).
  • Curious, creative, and enthusiastic about learning new things and improving one’s own critical thinking skills.

If interested in the programming-related activities, some or all of following qualifications are desired:

  • Fluency in C and/or Python
  • Advantageous to have written graphical user interfaces in Python
  • Advantageous to have written code interfaces between different tools
  • Has studied compilers 
  • Shows ability and interest in learning new languages independently with few online resources available
