The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering students currently pursuing or recently received a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree internships or fellowships at the Defense Healthcare Management Systems (DHMS) PEO. Degree must have been received within two years of the appointment start date.

Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to,
1) Collect and validate data
2) Develop statistical analysis of data by using state-of-the-art data science techniques in Python or R
3) Create dashboards using Tableau, PowerBI, or Qlik.
4) Design or update websites using HTML, CSS, Javascript, or other relevant libraries

What is the anticipated start date?
Defense Healthcare Management Systems (DHMS) PEO is prepared to begin appointments as qualified candidates are identified and selected. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a three-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by DoD. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About Defense Healthcare Management Systems (DHMS) PEO
The Program Executive Office, Defense Healthcare Management Systems was chartered to transform the delivery of health care and advance data sharing through a modernized electronic health record for service members, veterans, and their families. As part of the PEO, the Enterprise Intelligence and Data Solutions (EIDS) Program Management Office (PMO) supports the strategic goals of the MHS and facilitates informed decision-making through the delivery of robust information services, data, and data science capabilities. They deliver, connect, and curate data across a diverse data ecosystem in support of Military Health, readiness, federal health data integration, and innovation. EIDS provides seamless data services and decision support for clinicians, patients, and researchers.
About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will be currently pursuing or recently received a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree in Scientific or Engineering Studies.
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
- Basic knowledge of data science techniques and programming languages such as Python or R
- Since this is a remote opportunity, candidates should have access to a dedicated computer device.
