CDC Office and Location: Fellowship opportunities are available with the Partnerships and Health Equity Branch (PHEB), within the Immunization Services Division (ISD), in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD,) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety, and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

The mission of the Immunization Services Division (ISD) is to protect individuals and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases through provision of federal funds and contracts to purchase vaccine, the provision of technical and financial support of immunization programs, provider and public education, and evaluation and research. Within ISD is the Partnerships and Health Equity Branch (PHEB) which works with funded partners to increase vaccine equity, confidence, and demand. The Learning Community and Partnership Support (LCPS) Team within PHEB provides overarching technical assistance and capacity-building support to funded and unfunded partners to achieve immunization and health equity goals. LCPS facilitates a Learning Community and resource hub and hosts other opportunities for partners to share strategies and resources on promoting vaccine equity. LCPS is cross-cutting and supports branch-level program coordination, evaluation efforts, and partner communication.

Research Project: The intersection of health equity and immunization services was brought to the forefront during the COVID-19 pandemic. A considerable amount of health communications efforts in advancing vaccine equity were implemented with many documented in evidence-based research, gray literature, and mainstream media, and shared throughout the public health community as best practices or lessons learned. All the efforts need to be identified, collected and synthesized for future efforts.

LCPS is seeking up to 2 qualified and motivated candidates to support these efforts by conducting a systematic review of health communications strategies for promoting and advancing vaccine equity, gathering reports and articles in the mainstream media that document vaccine equity efforts, and creating a repository of publications and abstracts related to vaccine equity efforts to be housed in CDC and accessible to the LCPS community. 

Learning Objectives: The activities listed below represent the minimum training opportunities that the fellow will complete:

• Co-lead efforts in collaborating with a CDC librarian (with input from LCPS team)
• Co-lead a research team to determine the best process for conducting the systematic review, including search strategies, search terms, and other parameters such as time period
• Identify a rigorous process for scanning the mainstream media
• Collaborate with LCPS colleagues and an ISD IT colleague to determine the best way to house a repository commiserate with CDC guidelines and meets the needs of LCPS
• Synthesize research into a systematic review and develop a PowerPoint presentation
• Author a manuscript and any other outputs (e.g., blogs, etc.) commiserate with CDC guidelines for authorship regardless of the timing of the publications relative to the internship

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 14, 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for six months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is part-time (20 hours/week).

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. 

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should be a current Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) student pursuing a master's, doctoral, or medical degree in Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, Medicine, Public Health, or other related disciplines and have completed at least one year, to be completed before May 31, 2023. Recent graduates from MSM will also be considered, and a degree must have been received within the past five years.
