CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Division of Overdose Prevention (DOP), Prevention Programs and Evaluation Branch (PPEB), Program Evaluation Team at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. The team currently operates in a hybrid in person and virtual environment. The fellow must live or be willing to relocate within 50 miles of the CDC Chamblee, GA campus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The selected participant will have the opportunity to be mentored under the Program Evaluation Team to support the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program by helping to transform performance measurement and programmatic data into data visualizations. The selected fellow will manage and clean data collected and shared by health departments and prepare data products for dissemination. Main activities will be to develop a data reporting tool with data quality checks that can be used by health departments; develop and facilitate processes for data cleaning and data management; coordinate with team members to review data shared by health departments to identify data quality challenges; design data reporting tools to be used in a Power Bi dashboard that the fellow develops; and provide insight into the development of dashboards and additional data visualizations that integrate data from various sources--including additional data collected and shared by health departments and other publicly-available data sources.
The selected fellow will have the opportunity to train in the following areas, depending on the specific skill set and interests of the selected candidate:
- Culturally responsive evaluation
- Providing technical assistance and support to local health departments
- Best practices and evidence-based strategies to address drug overdose in the United States
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected fellow will have the opportunity to train and improve their skills in the following areas, depending on the specific skill set and interests of the selected candidate:
- Providing evaluation technical support/assistance to programs implementing novel strategies and approaches to preventing drug overdose
- Contributing to the development of an evaluation plan to understand the outputs, outcomes and impacts associated with overdose prevention efforts
- Identifying successful examples of overdose prevention strategies for sharing and creating tools for dissemination
- Analyzing and interpreting both qualitative and quantitative data and coming up with creative ways to disseminate data for information sharing. This may include data visualization, info graphics, or webinars.
- Contributing to manuscripts, abstracts, and other communications materials
- Contributing to the development and deployment of new virtual resources, trainings, and modules to support culturally responsive evaluation and the prevention of overdoses
- Supporting community needs assessments through development of resources and provision of technical assistance
- Directly collaborating with stakeholders such as state and local health departments and key non government organizations (NGO)
- Participating in the coordination of activities by the Division, partners, and stakeholders engaged in overdose prevention

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 5, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Date is anticipated based on CDC in-processing time frame.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. The participant will receive a starting monthly stipend of about $5000. Health insurance is required and available through ORISE with an additional stipend starting at $560 a month for individuals (more for families). ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before December 31, 2023. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred Skills:
- Demonstrated skills in data management and use of data management tools, including Excel
- Experience with statistical analysis software such as SAS or R
- Experience or knowledge with data visualization software such as Power BI and Tableau
- Experience working with data from local or state health departments
- Experience with health information system design and data systems management for integration
- Experience or knowledge in drug overdose and prevention or a related area
- Proficiency with oral and written communication skills, including scientific writing
- Demonstrated track record of collaborating effectively across disciplines, community environments, and sectors (e.g., federal agencies, state and local health departments)
- Demonstrated skills with Microsoft Office (e.g., Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
- Degree: Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 12/31/2023 12:00:00 AM.

I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
