CDC Office and Location: The Division of Violence Prevention (DVP) in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA is seeking candidates for an Oak Ridge Research Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellowship. Through its programs and initiatives, DVP works with national organizations, state and local health agencies, and other partners to develop, implement, and promote effective violence prevention strategies. This opportunity is in DVP’s Prevention Practice and Translation Branch (PPTB). The branch oversees DVP’s programs and provides program support and training and technical assistance. It also promotes the dissemination of science and practice-based evidence through translation products.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The fellow will support the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Prevention Team within the Prevention Practice and Translation Branch (PPTB) of the Division of Violence Prevention (DVP) in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC). The IPV Prevention team houses all work in the branch related to IPV prevention. The IPV Prevention Team’s specific goals include the development, implementation, and evaluation of cooperative agreements and other mechanisms designed to prevent IPV nationally. Further, the IPV Prevention team aims to provide training and technical assistance to the recipients of IPV prevention-related funds. The current cooperative agreement, DELTA AHEAD, is a five-year cooperative agreement that supports State Domestic Violence Coalitions (SDVCs) and local sub-recipients to decrease risk factors and increase protective factors for IPV and address the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH). SDVCs are required to address SDoH at the community and societal-levels of the Social Ecological Model (SEM) using evidence-informed strategies and adaptations to those strategies (including adaptations for prevention during a pandemic). SDVCs will 1) implement IPV primary prevention strategies to promote health equity at the state and community-levels, 2) partner with rural communities and/or indigenous communities, and 3) develop or enhance a State Action Plan (SAP) and a Community Action Plan (CAP) that demonstrates how each Program and Policy Effort (PPE) work comprehensively to address SDoH.
The fellow will support the IPV Prevention Team to implement the DELTA AHEAD program and to understand how recipients plan, implement, and evaluate IPV prevention strategies at the community and societal level. This includes supporting the training, administration, management, implementation, programmatic, and communication efforts for DELTA AHEAD. The fellow will be mentored by Jessie Crowell, the Team Lead of the IPV Prevention Team, but will have an opportunity to support other staff including project officers and evaluation officers.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
