CDC Office and Location: An ORISE position is currently available with the Poxvirus and Rabies Branch (PRB), Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DHCPP) at the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities:
- Maintenance of cell culture and propagating rabies virus in cell culture
- Perform rabies serology tests to detect antibodies against rabies virus
- The serology tests will include RFFIT, IFA, ELISA and other novel assays
- Analyze, publish, and present data
Learning Objectives: By participating in the above listed research and project, the participant will learn broad techniques and skills in the serological diagnostics of rabies virus. The participant will be able to collaborate with other scientists in the laboratory and get trained on the approach and techniques in the laboratory diagnostics of rabies virus at the CDC.
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Animal Sciences, Chemistry, Biology). Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred Skills:
- Basic laboratory background, cell culture experience is a plus
- Proficient in basic computer applications purification
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
I certify that I have not previously been employed by CDC or by a contractor working directly for CDC. I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
