CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The selected participant will gain experience in the field of infectious and zoonotic diseases, specifically those that involve the animal-human-environment interface and One Health.  The specific projects involve epidemiologic programmatic, educational, and policy projects related to the prevention and control of zoonoses (including One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritization Workshops), and contributing to the development of guidance for use by human and animal health and environment partners that can enhance surveillance, response, and prevention of zoonoses ad related One Health issues (e.g. antimicrobial resistance, food safety, vector-borne diseases).

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in the following activities:

• Contributing to One Health activities related to animal-human-environment interface issues, emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, pandemic preparedness, and outbreak response.
• Conducting systematic reviews and literature searches to support the development of evidence-based recommendations related to zoonoses and One Health.
• Contributing to the development of data collection systems for One Health activities and primary and secondary data abstraction, interpretation, analysis, and synthesis.
• Maintaining accurate records of process-specific objectives, timelines, outcomes, and deliverables.
• Contributing to the development of One Health frameworks, and evaluating and providing recommendations to strengthen existing One Health frameworks and networks.
• Writing and editing summary of evidence documents and prevention recommendations relevant to One Health
• Collaborating with One Health groups (both internal and external to CDC), professional human and animal health societies, environment partners, local, state, tribal, and territorial health departments, international organizations and governments, non-governmental organizations, industry, academic, and community-based organizations.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
