CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the One Health Office within the National Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The ORISE fellow will support CDC's One Health Office in the implementation of capacity building activities globally to support global health security. Specific projects involve epidemiological, programmatic, and education projects related to advancing One Health, prevention and control of zoonotic diseases, and contributing to the development of resources for use by One Health partners to enhance preparedness, response, surveillance, and prevention and control of zoonotic diseases in the US and globally.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the ORISE Fellow will be trained in the following activities:
- Contribute to One Health activities related to human-animal-environment interface issues, emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases, pandemic preparedness, and outbreak response
- Support the preparation, planning, and implementation of global capacity building activities, including trainings and workshops
- Train facilitators and facilitate One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritization workshops and other trainings
- Develop and update resources to support partners to strengthen One Health and address zoonotic diseases, including resources for emergency preparedness and response at the human-animal-environment interface
- Conduct data collection, cleaning, management, and analysis, develop data visualizations, and support data dissemination of epidemiological investigations, surveillance activities, and monitoring and evaluation activities
- Conduct systematic reviews and literature searches to support the development of evidence- based recommendations related to One Health and zoonotic disease
- Communicate and present on project advancements with CDC colleagues and One Health partners, including through meetings, presentations, reports, and publications
- Collaborate with One Health partners (both internal and external to CDC), human, animal, and environmental health agencies, international organizations and governments, non-governmental organizations, and community-based organizations, and others.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred Skills:
- Extensive experience in epidemiology, public health, and/or veterinary medicine
- Enthusiasm and knowledge of One Health, global health, and epidemiological principles
- Fluency in Spanish (reading, writing, and speaking), preferred
- Diplomacy and cultural competency working with diverse partners
- Ability to be take initiative and work in fast-paced environment with changing priorities
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, both independently and as part of a team
- Well organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and adaptable
- Interest in potential global travel and training opportunities
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including experience with writing and editing of documents and developing presentations to scientific and non-scientific communities
- Ability to search and assess scientific literature (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, etc)
- Intermediate data analytical skills (e.g., mathematical or statistical modelling)
- Intermediate or higher knowledge of a statistical programming language (e.g. R, SAS)
- Competency in quality management system procedures and database software (Adobe Professional, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access)
I certify that I have not previously been employed by CDC or by a contractor working directly for CDC. I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
