CDC Office and Location: A training opportunity is currently available with the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: This ORISE fellow training opportunity will focus on building public health skills related to implementation science and the use of evidence-based interventions to improve nutrition and physical activity behaviors. Intervention foci include the early care and education setting (also known as child care) and other key clinical and community settings to support healthy child growth and chronic disease prevention.  The ORISE participant will build skill in developing generalizable knowledge from local knowledge by encouraging the use of common frameworks and harmonized constructs and measures, synthesizing information across sites, and applying lessons to a variety of sectors and settings.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, this Early Care and Education (ECE) ORISE fellow training opportunity includes:

• Building implementation science skills and knowledge of theories (e.g. Consolidated Framework for Advancing Implementation Science) to understand determinants of implementation to develop strategies to support greater use of early care and education evidence-based interventions 
• Contributing to the preparation of implementation science focused visual tools, logic models, conceptual frameworks, scientific manuscripts, websites, briefing documents or presentations
• Building skills to develop common measures of policy-system-environment (PSE) relevant implementation processes and outcomes using related to nutrition and physical activity strategies and interventions that support healthy growth and reduction of chronic disease risk 
• Building public health skills related to equitable implementation of interventions in order to meet the needs of communities and settings with the greatest health disparities, which can include understanding context, use of advisory committees, cultural and equity focused intervention adaptation processes, and/or system level supports  
• Synthesizing information including common implementation-related constructs across studies and communicating with scientific staff, partners, public health program recipients and practitioners, early care and education practitioners, health care professionals  
• Participating in interdisciplinary research and interest groups and interacting with experts including public health practitioners, child development experts, researchers, and evaluation specialists

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Early 2024.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral (preferred) degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Candidates with a master’s degree and significant coursework or experience with implementation science and/or implementation research are encouraged to apply.
