CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Epidemiology and Applied Research Branch (EARB), Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The purpose of this project is to: (1) examine and review current scientific evidence on risk factors that affect cancer development and population-based strategies to reduce cancer risk; (2) analyze population-based data on cancer incidence and cancer risk factors to identify disparities and assess trends; (3) prepare manuscripts, reports, presentations and other communication materials on emerging issues for cancer prevention and control; and (4) identify and collaborate with internal and external partners on cross-cutting research and dissemination activities.
Learning Objectives: The fellow will participate in activities to support CDC efforts to prevent cancer and reduce cancer risk. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities:
- The conduct of literature reviews;
- The analysis of data from the National Health Interview Survey on cancer risk factors and behaviors;
- The analysis of registry data on cancer incidence;
- Participation in internal work groups, including the Cancer Prevention Across the Lifespan work group and the Skin Cancer work group;
- Contributions to manuscripts and other communication products to share relevant findings; and
- The planning of meetings with relevant internal and external partners on these topics.
There will also be opportunities available to participate in a variety of DCPC programs, projects, and training activities.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 30, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The current appointment period ends on 06/24/2023 and may be renewed for an additional year or years of participation in the fellowship program upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination). Additionally, the fellow will follow the telework schedule based on guidance and recommendations applicable to all Division staff.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Applicants are not required to have all of the skills listed below to be considered for this opportunity. Applicants are also encouraged to identify skills below that they would like to develop:
- Strong background in statistics and data analysis
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of risk factors for non-communicable diseases
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Proficient in SAS, Stata, SPSS, R, Python, or other appropriate software that can be used for data analysis
- Experience with analyses of national survey data and accounting for complex survey design
- Experience conducting systematic reviews of the peer-reviewed literature
- Experience conducting analyses using SEER*Stat
- Experience with qualitative data analysis
- Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration
I certify that I have not previously been employed by CDC or by a contractor working directly for CDC. I understand that CDC does not permit individuals with a prior employment relationship with CDC or its contractors to participate as trainees in the ORISE program. (Exceptions may be granted for individuals who, since the previous CDC employment, have obtained a new STEM degree which necessitates training in a new field.)
