CDC Office and Location: Multiple research opportunities are available in the Office of Science (OS), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Research Participation Programs at the CDC are educational and training programs designed to provide students and recent graduate’s opportunities to participate in project-specific CDC research and developmental activities at CDC facilities that are related to CDC’s mission.

The OS mission is to promote quality, integrity, and innovation of CDC science to improve the public’s health. To achieve its mission for CDC’s 11,000 scientists, OS has five embedded offices that work to uphold scientific ideals; establish an environment of scientific excellence, integrity and innovation; and promote timely dissemination and translation of scientific information, innovations, and technology. In addition, this office serves as the primary advisor to CDC senior leaders on agency-wide scientific issues.

Research Project: The OS offers a variety of high-profile initiatives and projects, including agency leadership on health equity science and equity data as well as key data modernization initiative projects and supporting The Community Guide. Fellows participating in OS will have the opportunity to train across all of CDC’s domestic and global portfolio and will gain an excellent understanding of the agency.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will train with staff on opportunities that may include:

• Analyzing data on health equity science and learning to develop reports and publications
• Collaborating on science components of CDC’s emergency response on COVID-19 and other public health emergencies
• Conducting science portfolio analyses and developing publications
• Collaborating on projects that focus on different aspects of CDC’s Science Agenda that includes Agency wide efforts to advance quality, integrity and innovation of CDC science. This includes training in assessment of impact and bibliometric analyses.
• Participating in quantitative and qualitative data review and analysis related to scientific initiatives within the Office of Science
• Collaborating on the development and presentation of scientific information including findings and recommendations, briefing materials, data analysis, policy research and analysis, and project proposals, related to CDC’s Science Agenda
• Participating in collaborative engagement with scientific teams and Agency groups
• Collaborating on the development of scientific project proposals and plans including project plan development, tracking and status reporting for key initiatives led by the Office of Science Director and other Senior Leadership in data modernization, knowledge management, and implementation science
• Collaborating on the creation of templates and resource documents to support the development of public health guidelines.
• Participating and training in systematic reviews of evidence on the effectiveness of public health interventions.
• Train in optimizing and automating systems for information quality and content, assess archive structure and utilization, apply bibliometric and other analytic methods to the assessment of science impact.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2024/2025. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years, or be currently pursuing.

Preferred skills:

• Experience in conducting or evaluating scientific research
• Strong organizational skills and knowledge of project management principles
• Experienced in writing research papers, thesis or dissertation, or other complex technical documents         
• Experience with oral presentations
