CDC Office and Location: One research opportunity is currently available with the Global Workforce Development Branch in the Division of Global Health Protection at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: This opportunity will be with the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) Team, under the guidance of the Team Lead and Lead Epidemiologist. The opportunity will allow the participant to learn from a variety of experts across the team and branch, including those with technical expertise, in evaluation, data analysis and statistics, technical writing, and more. Through this fellowship, the participant can expect to participate in three main projects:

1. Train to engage with technical support teams to participate in periodic calls with select country program staff to learn to monitor program progress, gain experience in promoting the implementation of the One Health curriculum, to collaborate on FETP Lusophone Network meetings and activities, and to participate in manuscript reviews and feedback sessions on FETP resident field products and conference submissions;
2. Collaborate on the coordination, outline, and monitoring of team strategy through participation in the FETP Institutionalization and Sustainability Working Group. Fellow will learn about collaborating with a team to develop identified deliverables to advance program institutionalization and sustainability, including contributing to an article on FETP Institutionalization and;
3. Collaborate with the FETP Knowledge Management Working Group to gain experience in developing and implementing a strategy for FETP file organization and knowledge management for internal and external dissemination through ShareFile and SharePoint.

Learning Objectives: The participant should expect to gain skills and experience in a variety of areas, such as:

• Communications: learn how to use oral and written professional communication to build relationships, including providing mentorship and support to key audiences and keeping a network of professionals (e.g., leadership, partners) informed.
• Marketing: learn how to develop tailored, data-driven marketing strategies, based on key audiences.
• Building partnerships and coalitions: learn how to engage with internal and external partners, such as offices both national and international.
• Evaluation and analysis: learn how to develop evaluation plans using logic models and program goals to design valid and reliable survey instruments and assess program impact through data analysis.
• Knowledge management: learn how to use electronic, online systems to collect, store and retrieve data.
• Technical writing and informatics: learn how to write scientifically while using plain language and translate data into meaningful graphics, figures, and information for a variety of audiences, including CDC leaders and partners.
• Collaboration and teamwork: gain experience on how to utilize and leverage the skillsets of others to produce timely, quality products.
• Time management: learn how to appropriately plan one’s project timelines and monitor progress toward completion.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 12, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for 11 months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
