CDC Office and Location: 

This opportunity is available with the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Data Analysis Branch (MEDAB) within the Division for Global HIV and TB (DGHT), at the Global Health Center, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

DGHT works to develop and implement a unified CDC vision and mission to address HIV/AIDS and TB in high priority countries to maximize the impact of our global HIV and TB efforts. DGHT provides technical assistance to more than 45 countries through its country and regional offices and through headquarters support.  CDC works through its partnerships with Ministries of Health and local and international partners to implement integrated HIV/AIDS and TB clinical and preventive services and systems; develop and strengthen laboratory services; and provide epidemiologic science, informatics, and research support to develop sustainable public health systems in resource-constrained countries. MEDAB provides technical leadership, capacity strengthening, and programmatic assistance to DGHT HQ and CDC Country teams in monitoring and evaluation for global HIV and TB programs.

Research Project: The Clinical Programs Monitoring and Evaluation team strives to advance the collection, quality, analysis, and use of data in clinical HIV & TB prevention, care, and treatment programs to ensure effective patient management, program monitoring and evaluation (M&E), impact, equity, and accountability. The participant will have the opportunity to build skills and receive training across a number of activities the team and branch support, including data collection, management, and analysis; using business intelligence and other analytic platforms to develop dashboards and visualize routine program monitoring data; developing tools for for monitoring and reporting; analyzing HIV and TB program level data for quarterly data reviews, country operational planning, conference presentations, and publications. The fellow may also have the opportunity to join overseas deployments.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will:

• Support development of methods and tools for active, responsive M&E at US agency, implementing partner, national, subnational and site levels within priority areas
• Collaborate with CDC headquarters and country office colleagues to pilot new methods and standardized approaches for routine program monitoring and data quality improvement
• Join data quality teams to assess and validate clinic and national level data
• Learn innovative and effective methods for using patient level data systems for patient management and program monitoring
• Build proficiency with data visualization tools and software, and learn how to effectively storyboard with program results at the country level and across regions
• Gain professional experience in international public health settings

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 15, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
