CDC Office and Location: There is a research fellowship opportunity available in the Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The Evaluation Team strengthens the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's response capacity by capturing in-stride improvements and lessons learned during public health emergencies and exercises. The team collects and analyzes qualitative and quantitative data obtained from a variety of sources during public health emergencies and exercises. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will have the opportunity to be involved in the collection, management, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, including interpreting the data, preparing reports and presentations, and contributing to manuscripts, to name a few.

Learning Objectives: This fellowship will offer the opportunity to learn about and obtain hands-on experience in the following activities:

  • Plan and implement qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
  • Explore methods to visualize data in ways that resonate with intended users
  • Translate findings into practical, robust recommendations to improve emergency response activities in the short-term and over time
  • Synthesize and report findings and recommendations in multiple formats to various audiences (e.g., one page reports, After Action Reports, conference presentations, journal articles)
  • Collaborating with staff in the development, piloting, and implementation of monitoring and evaluation tools
  • Learn about emergency response principles and CDC response activities

Mentor(s)The mentor for this opportunity is Bill Howard (wsf1@cdc.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research please contact the mentor(s).

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 1, 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
