The Headquarters, Department of the Army Directorate of Prevention, Resilience and Readiness is offering a postgraduate internship in Arlington, Virginia.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers at the (HQDA), G-9, (DPRR) in an effort to establish an Army-wide prevention system that facilitates data-informed actions to integrate primary prevention activities and prevent harmful behaviors. The goal is to orient Army’s prevention programs, policies, and practices so that they are research-based and data-informed.

  • Literature reviews and logic model development related to primary prevention of sexual assault, harassment, suicide, domestic abuse, and child abuse and neglect to guide evaluation efforts (e.g., review of evidence-based approaches for primary prevention and their application in Military communities)
  • Process evaluation of prevention activities (policies, programs, and practices)
  • Outcome evaluation of prevention activities (policies, programs, and practices)
  • Identification of metrics to be used for process and outcome evaluations of prevention activities

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
 
What are the benefits? 

The stipend range will be approximately $4000.00 to $4500.00/month for bachelor's level candidates up to $8000.00 to $9000.00/month for postdoctoral candidates based on fulltime participation and will be determined by HQDA. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About HQDA

In July 2023, the Army stood up its Integrated Prevention Division and began hiring its Phase I Integrated Prevention Advisory Group (I-PAG) workforce. The I-PAG engages in non-clinical primary prevention activities that address two or more harmful behaviors before they occur. It serves as a multidisciplinary workforce, and its primary functions are to (1) design prevention policies, approaches and strategies to form a research-based, comprehensive, and integrated primary prevention plan; (2) advise commanders and leaders at all levels on all aspects of the prevention process / data-informed actions and prevention system; (3) collaborate with internal and external prevention partners to maximize prevention capabilities and reduce factors that contribute to harmful behaviors; (4) leverage existing data and collect new data, as necessary, to conduct needs assessments and inform a comprehensive approach to prevention; (5) select and guide implementation of and establish metrics for evaluating prevention activities.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications
The qualified candidate will have or be currently pursuing a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in public health, psychology, sociology, or related field. U.S. military veterans who have been honorably discharged (or who have been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability), and who received a bachelor's degree within ten years of the desired start date are eligible.
 
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
  • Knowledge and/or experience in planning, organizing, implementing, analyzing, and integrating comprehensive primary prevention efforts through coalitions and partnerships within and outside of the military community.
  • Knowledge of the public health approach to prevention.
  • Experience in literature reviews for public health or prevention science topics.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in interpreting and analyzing data that will be used in understanding the scope of harmful behaviors in a military community.
  • Understanding of analytic approaches that can be used to evaluate individual prevention activities and the combined effects of multiple prevention activities across the individual, interpersonal, and organizational levels of the social ecology.
  • Understanding and/or experience in qualitative, quantitative and mixed method analyses for public health issues.
  • Experience in developing logic models.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in feasibility, evaluability, process and/or outcome evaluations.
