The EPA Environmental Research and Business Support Program has an immediate opening for a full-time Water Treatment Data Research position with the EPA’s Office of Research and Development’s facility in Cincinnati, OH.
What the EPA project is about
The Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.
The National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) within ORD at EPA researches, identifies, develops and tests innovative tools, methods and technologies used to solve and prevent complex environmental problems to safeguard human health and the environment. EPA scientists and engineers seek to determine what environmental risks exist and determine how to manage, reduce or eliminate those risks in a sustainable manner. The Water Systems Division (WSD) has the responsibility for a research program to help prepare the primary and secondary regulations for drinking water. This program integrates chemistry, engineering, microbiology and cost analysis to provide effective, reliable and cost-effective techniques (source water protection, acquisition, treatment, distribution and residual management) for assuring the delivery of safe drinking water. WSD also investigates and evaluates environmental restoration strategies and technologies, and addresses problems associated with deteriorating water and wastewater infrastructure systems. The Drinking Water Treatment & Distribution Branch (DWTDB) focuses on studying the removal of contaminants from drinking water sources and controlling drinking distribution system issues.
DWTDB has two particularly active research areas: drinking water distribution system issues and drinking water treatment systems for small communities. Modeling of water treatment system performance is useful for helping water utilities to predict treatment performance and properly size treatment systems. Modeling the treatment effectiveness is particularly important for contaminants of emerging concern—specifically per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances—where full-scale data may not always be available. Developing technologies that address such contaminats while considering the financial and other resource constraints in the small community is of great importance to the EPA.
What you will be doing
As a member of the team, you will assist WSD/DWTDB staff with the duties required to support and maintain projects impacting PFAS research.
How you will apply your skills
- Processing treatment data from internal and external sources;
- Analyzing data using spreadsheets, graphical software and simple modeling; and
- Assisting with development of presentations and technical manuscripts.
Required skills
- A working knowledge of environmental and chemical treatment processes;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook and SharePoint; and
- Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills.
Location: This job will be located at the EPA facility in Cincinnati, OH.
Salary: Selected applicant will receive an hourly wage of $21.75 for hours worked.
Hours: Full-time
Travel: No travel is anticipated for this position.
Expected start date: This full-time position is expected to begin September 2019. The selected applicant will be a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial project is through May 14, 2020, followed by potential option periods.
Working conditions: The selected candidate shall be supervised by a mentor who will provide day-to-day direction.
- Be at least 18 years of age and
- Have earned a Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering or other related disciplines from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
- Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
