A research opportunity is currently available in the Laboratory of Bacterial and TSE Agents, at the Center for Biological Evaluation and Research (CBER) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
CBER's mission is to ensure the safety, purity, potency, and effectiveness of biological products including vaccines, blood and blood products, and cells, tissues, and gene therapies for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases, conditions, or injury. The ongoing research performed involves the study of transmission of Treponema pallidum by blood transfusion. This opportunity provides training for those interested in developing new skills on blood infectious diseases.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA in Silver Springs, Maryland. Participants do not become employee of FDA nor the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
The Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12) mandates a background check be completed for both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals. Foreign nationals must have resided in the U.S. for at least three (3) of the past five (5) years in order for FDA be able to complete a background check.

Applicants must have received a Bachelor, Mastor, or Doctoral degree within five years of the start date. The candidate should be familiar with handling live animals, comfortable with working with infectious pathogens in biosafety level II laboratory, skilled in basic molecular biology techniques, and knowledgeable in assay development.
