Description

Research Topic Description, including Problem Statement:

The goal of this research is to combine the best that the medical industry and watch-making industry can offer to create small (order of 10mm) robots that can remotely manipulate items with both dexterity and high forces. Autonomy is not the focus of this work; there can be a degree of human control, and an umbilical cable for power, but the robot must operate 1-100 m away. The robot need not be as small as those used in the medical industry, but could be 20 or 30mm, and even have a single dimension up to 100mm.

Example Approaches:

Design and build a selection of concept demonstrators that can work in hard to access, confined spaces. The robot should be able to maneuver over rough surfaces and may use a variety of sensing modalities to navigate itself and to aid object manipulation. Swarming of the robots could be considered to support collaborative behavior, but is not the sole focus of this work. Bio-informed approaches could also be used; the robot having articulated joints for example or the capacity to move by undulation.
