How to Apply

Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by the application deadline through the Zintellect Online Application System.

A complete application consists of:

  • All required fields in both the profile and application form.
  • Academic records with the most recent degree or degree in progress. Unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted.
  • Minimum of two relevant letters of references. These letters should address the student’s academic record and potential for success in an internship, as indicated by communication and teamwork skills. For students with robotics competition experience, it is recommended that one of the letters be from the competition’s coach or someone who can discuss the student’s involvement in the competition.

NOTE: If you are a high school student, who will graduate in Spring 2017, mark your degree status as "Undergraduate." Please note in comments that you are a graduating high school senior and will be attending college in Fall 2017.

Description

The Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) Robotics Internship Program provides opportunities for students and recent graduates to intern at federal national laboratories and private sector organizations throughout the United States. This program is a partnership between the public and private sectors to continue the development of the future robotics technical, engineering, and advanced manufacturing workforce.

Internship details:

  • The 2017 summer internships will be 10-week appointments at a variety of national laboratories and private industries across the United States. Participants will perform research or other technical activities under the guidance of a mentor who is a technical staff scientist or engineer at the host facility.
  • Recent high school graduates, postgraduates with an associate degree, and undergraduate students will receive a stipend of $600 per week. Graduate students and postgraduates will receive $750 per week.
  • Interns will be reimbursed for inbound-outbound travel expenses to their appointment site, up to a combined maximum of $1,000.
  • Interns whose home location is more than 50 miles will receive a $150 per week housing allowance.

Qualifications

Successful applicants will meet the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years old by May 1, 2017.
  • Meet one of the following conditions:
    • Postgraduate: Have earned an associate, undergraduate, or graduate degree in the past five years in a field related to robotics, manufacturing, or engineering.
    • Student: Be enrolled as a full-time student pursuing a degree related to robotics, manufacturing, or engineering.
    • High School Senior: Be enrolled as a high school senior expected to graduate by Summer 2017 and planning to be enrolled in an undergraduate program for Fall 2017. Proof of acceptance to an accredited U.S. university or community college must be submitted to ORISE at the time the appointment is accepted.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.

Prior experience in a high school or college robotics competition program is preferred.
