Description

A postgraduate research project training opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water (OW). The appointment will be served with the Office of Science and Technology (OST) in Washington, D.C.

This project is to design and implement a plan to foster consideration of sustainability principles across the OW programs (Regions and Headquarters).The intern will join an OW team involved with a range of technical, policy and program support activities to assess how OW programs and policies can better foster consideration and integration of sustainability principles into its programs.

The intern will have the opportunity to attend meetings and conferences regarding water sustainability.

Through this project the intern will develop a sound understanding of water resources management, including the critical challenges facing the U.S. and world, and gain an understanding of sustainability initiatives that are currently being implemented and are on the horizon to solve water resource issues. S/he will be exposed to regulatory, policy, technical, and research experiences related to Water Sustainability.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.

Qualifications

Applicants must have received a master’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental public policy or a related field within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.

The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend will 53.435. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
