Description

A postgraduate internship opportunity is available at the EPA Headquarters, Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds (OWOW), Office of Water in Washington, DC.

OWOW promotes a watershed approach to manage, protect, and restore the water resources and aquatic ecosystems of our marine and fresh waters. This strategy is based on the premise that water quality and ecosystem problems are best solved at the watershed level and that local citizens play an integral role in achieving clean water goals.

The project involves developing and communicating key water data messages from EPA and its intermediaries to educate the public and key stakeholders about water pollution and solutions, enhancing public awareness of these issues, and encouraging stewardship of waters on a local, regional and national basis.

The ORISE participant will gain experience in:

  • Clean Water Act programs and its objectives.
  • Approaches for providing better access to and interpretation of existing water data.
  • Investigating existing water data’s utility for addressing real world challenges.
  • Spotlighting socioeconomic case study examples of what water conditions translate to for families, communities and the Nation’s economy and health.

The ORISE participant will learn:

  • How to analyze human health and environmental data.
  • Awareness about quality issues that impact various sectors in the U.S.
  • Approaches for broadly sharing environmental information through the Web and Social Marketing.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.
