Description

The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) seeks versatile, highly motivated candidates for a post-doctoral position in the Atmospheric Technologies Group (ATG).  The ATG conducts a comprehensive program in applied meteorology at the U. S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site in South Carolina, and performs atmospheric research and development for diverse DOE interests in the areas of international nuclear nonproliferation, emergency response, carbon science, climate change, and renewable energy. This position provides an opportunity for the incumbent to transition to permanent employment.

The successful candidate will be expected to work with senior ATG researchers in one or more of the following potential areas of investigation: (1) Improving performance of meteorological and air contaminant transport models used to support national security clients, through novel methods for assimilating routine and/or non-standard observations or using ensemble techniques to identify model uncertainties; (2) quantifying characteristics of air-emission sources using field measurements, meteorological observations, and atmospheric modeling; (3) examining the interaction of airborne radioactive water vapor plumes with a forested ecosystem to quantify air/forest exchange rates  and determine the fate and transport of in-canopy plumes; (4) characterizing the spatial and temporal variability of the solar energy resource across the Southeast U.S. to improve electricity load forecasts.

ATG offers the following resources for potential research projects: a comprehensive local network of meteorological towers with extensive databases; LIDAR; field-deployable SODAR; a 30-meter carbon/water vapor flux tower; a 330-meter tall tower facility equipped for meteorological and trace gas measurements; and dedicated high-performance computing resources.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must be nearing completion of, or have recently completed, a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or Meteorology. Experience in atmospheric modeling is preferred.  A demonstrated knowledge of atmospheric boundary layer processes, including turbulence and diffusion, and significant exposure to statistics is highly desirable. The successful candidate must have excellent communication and presentation skills, and be able to work easily within multidisciplinary teams. SRNL provides excellent opportunities for research that has practical, real-world relevance.

The SRNL is located on DOE’s Savannah River Site reservation in South Carolina near Augusta, GA, and is operated for DOE by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC.   For more information contact:   Mr. Chuck Hunter, 803-725-2953, chuck.hunter@srnl.doe.gov.   Interested candidates should apply through the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Zintellect web site (https://www.zintellect.com/Home/Applicant).  The job reference code is SRNL15-07-NSD.    U.S. citizenship is required.

This SRNL Postgraduate Research Associates Program is administered by ORAU though its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
