Description

Are you ready to learn by collaborating with federal leaders to provide our Nation with the accurate, reliable information we need to measure the accessibility and connectivity of the transportation network to our communities?  Do you want to help DOT, planning agencies, and researchers demonstrate the importance and role of transportation data and analysis for the Nation? Take an appointment with our team and learn how to analyze the impact of the transportation system. The fellow will participate on research and analysis in BTS data collection programs administered under the Confidential Information Protection and Statistical Efficiency Act (CIPSEA, title III of the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018, Pub. L. 115-435), which prohibits BTS from disclosing data collected under these programs in identifiable form. CIPSEA protections can help to overcome legal concerns companies may have about sharing sensitive or proprietary data, and has enabled various data collection program in the areas of freight, transportation safety, and energy. Data collection initiatives within DOT and BTS that the fellow may contribute to include: the Freight Logistics Optimization Works program (FLOW) and other supply chain research efforts, the Confidential Close Call Program for Transit, the SafeOCS near miss safety reporting program for the offshore energy industries, the SafeMTS near miss reporting program for the maritime industry, other transportation safety-related data collection programs and research efforts, and confidential transportation survey programs administered by BTS.

This fellowship offers a competitive stipend, travel allowance and eligible for health insurance benefits.

The appointment will be served within the Bureau of Transportation Statistics in Washington, DC, with remote eligibility.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) is the Principal Federal Statistical Agency that provides objective, comprehensive, and relevant information on the extent and use of the Nation’s transportation system, how well the system performs, and the effects of the system on society and the environment. 

Qualifications

DOT is looking for the following in a successful applicant: 

  • Coursework and/or experience in transportation, collection analysis, data analysis, computer programming, and/or technology.
  • Coursework and/or experience with R, Python, SAS, or other statistical software.
  • Coursework and/or experience linking and analyzing transportation datasets.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet established deadlines with products that reflect professionalism.
  • Experience analyzing data to identify patterns and trends.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work across various offices, work units, and organizations to obtain information, collaborate on data-related projects, and validate findings and conclusions.
