The United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a post-graduate (or currently pursing) level fellowship in biomedical engineering & instrumentation support with a focus on public health. 

What will I be doing?

You will be part of a multi-faceted team that will be developing instrumentation and software solutions that will aid in collecting physiological data in laboratory and field experiments in extreme environments, to include heat, cold, high-altitude, and subterranean.

What is the anticipated start date?

The USARIEM is ready to make appointments effective October 2022. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

Appointment Length

This is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for up to four additional years, depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USARIEM

USARIEM was established in 1961 as a research laboratory under the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (now USAMRMC). USARIEM is internationally recognized as the DoD’s premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance. The Institute is organized into five divisions: Biophysics and Biomedical Modeling, Military Performance, Military Nutrition, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. By leveraging its unique capabilities and facilities with industry, academia, and the government, USARIEM produces a variety of important products, including performance optimization doctrine, preventive medicine and planning doctrine, material development support, physiological monitoring strategies and predictive algorithms, and Health Hazard Assessments. 

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have a bachelor's or master's degree (or will have completed their degree by 31 December 2022) in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a similar discipline.  Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a Federal Background Check

Highly competitive applicants will have the following knowledge, skills, and qualities:

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and sound skills in written and oral communication
  • Advanced computer skills, including MATLAB, Arduino, and C#
  • Experience with reading schematics, troubleshooting equipment, and root cause analysis
  • Knowledge of basic circuit analysis and engineering principles
  • Experience with soldering components and repairing research equipment
  • Excellent teamwork skills, who take initiative and are willing to learn new/different roles during their experience.
  • Utilizing their engineering expertise to contribute to team projects.
