Description

The United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is offering a postdoctoral research opportunity.

What will I be doing? 

As an ORISE participant you will join a community of scientists and researchers and be involved in two to four of the following research projects:

  • Prediction of acute mountain sickness at altitude.
  • Development of novel sensors to detect oxygen saturation.
  • Prediction of heat stroke.
  • Genomic prediction of altitude, heat and cold injuries.

  • Project management.
  • Data collection of physiologic and biologic data.
  • Data compilation techniques using Microsoft Excel and/or Matlab.
  • Data analysis techniques utilizing statistical programs such as SPSS or SAS, and both written and oral publication skills.
  • Institutional Review Board procedures.
  • Team Leadership.
  • Collaboration with a wide range of individuals within the Institute.
  • Grant writing.
  • Development of independent research program.

Where will I be located?

Natick, Massachusetts (Some travel to US Army and Marine bases for data collection may be required.)

What is the anticipated start date?

The USARIEM is ready to make appointments effective as soon as possible. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

Appointment Length

Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

  • Health Insurance Supplement. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE.
  • Relocation Allowance.
  • Training and Travel Allowance.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate must have or be close to completing a Doctoral Degree in the area of Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Biomedical Engineering, Biostatistics or Epidemiology.

Highly competitive applicants will have the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • General understanding of human physiology and exercise science.
  • Statistical analysis programs such as SPSS or SAS.
  • Data coding languages such as Python or Matlab.
  • Clinical or research experience working with test volunteers or patients.
  • Team-leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills.
  • SAS certification.
  • Grant writing.
  • Previous experience in development of research programs. 

The successful applicant will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the host facility, including but not limited to COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).
