The US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the research area of nutrition and exercise physiology.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers seeking to highlight the integrative effects of diet composition and exercise on substrate oxidation and physical performance.

  • Execution of randomized controlled trials that examine impact of nutrition, exercise, dietary supplements, and pharmacological interventions for Warfighters exposed to military operational stress
  • Hands-on experience collecting data from exercise testing, indirect calorimetry, stable isotope methodologies, muscle biopsies, and biological samples

What is the anticipated start date?

The USARIEM is ready to make an appointment effective May 1, 2022.  Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and the internship will be filled as a qualified candidate is identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USARIEM

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM),  is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter health and performance science and its applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, and nutrition research. The Military Nutrition Division (MND) conducts research on nutritional issues affecting the health and mission-readiness of military personnel, and supports the US Army Surgeon General’s responsibilities as the Department of Defense’s executive agent for nutrition research. The facility contains environmental chambers for controlling temperature and humidity, an environmentally controlled hypobaric chamber, a water immersion laboratory, as well as several dry and wet laboratories for animal and human experimentation. The dry laboratories are capable of a broad range of experiments, including biomechanical analysis, body composition, energy expenditure, muscle strength and endurance. The wet laboratories include general clinical chemistry analyzers, as well as equipment for ELISA, RIA, histology, and molecular biology assays. For more information about USARIEM, please visit https://www.usariem.army.mil/.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will possess, or is currently pursuing, a doctoral degree in nutritional sciences, exercise physiology, or a closely related field.   

Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

  • Western blotting
  • RT-qPCR
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Statistical Analysis using SPSS, SAS, or equivalent
