The Military Performance Division (MPD) within the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering weekend/early morning internships at the Columbia, South Carolina facility.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to gain experience processing phlebotomy and biological specimens. Specifically you will assist with data collection for a study assessing risk factors for musculoskeletal injury during U.S. Army Basic Combat Training.
Columbia, South Carolina. Travel to the data collection site (Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC) is required.
What is the anticipated start date?
The target time for the internship to begin is July 12, 2021.
What is the appointment length?
This is a four month appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. The participation rate may vary from completing 4-10 hours of training or research per week depending on candidate availability.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.
About USARIEM
The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its useful applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, performance and nutrition research. It features integrated cellular, tissue, & human research programs.
About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Candidates should be enrolled in (or have completed) a phlebotomy credentialing course and/or are pursuing a degree in exercise science, physiology, kinesiology, or a closely related field.
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
- Demonstrated proficiency with written and oral communication, and excellent organizational skills are preferred.
- Experience with collecting data in human subjects research related to exercise physiology is a plus.
- Demonstrated qualities of being self-motivated, punctual, and able to function well within a collaborative laboratory environment.
Candidates must be available for data collection on Sundays between the times of 5:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon, with preferred availability through approximately 2:00 p.m. (exact times may be subject to change). Candidates who have the above Sunday availability at least 5 out of the 8 Sundays (approximately August 15 through October 3, 2021) of data collection will be considered. Availability on all 8 Sundays is preferred. Internships may be offered for individuals with less availability during the hours listed above, but who have the demonstrated critical skill sets. Additional availability on Monday through Saturday mornings for daily data collection is a plus, as candidates also have the option to be involved with morning weekly data collection if they are interested.
