Description

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance.

What will I be doing?

The Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division is offering an ORISE learning opportunity. As an ORISE participant, you will be involved in supporting research studies regarding human physiological responses to heat, cold and/or high altitude. During your appointment and under the guidance of a mentor, you will learn federal laboratory and operational protocols. This will include the planning and organization of research studies, including data collection from human volunteer subjects (for example, exercise testing, cardiovascular responses to high altitude, blood samples, etc). You will learn about the physiology of responses to exercise and environment in humans, including breathing, blood oxygen levels, and heart rate responses.

Where will I be located?

This opportunity will be in Natick, Massachusetts. Please note this opportunity may include some travel. The ORISE participant may travel to Pikes Peak, CO to participate in research data collection for a study of physiology and exercise performance at high altitude.

What is the anticipated start date?

This appointment is anticipated to begin in 2024; exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate.

Appointment Length

This is a full-time twelve-month appointment. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and participant availability. 

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by the Department of Defense (DoD). Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance.

The Institute has four divisions: Military Nutrition, Military Performance, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. By leveraging its unique capabilities and facilities with industry, academia, and the government, USARIEM produces various essential products, including performance optimization doctrine, preventive medicine, planning doctrine, materiel development support, physiological monitoring strategies and predictive algorithms, and Health Hazard Assessments.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications

Highly competitive applicants will have the following knowledge and skills:

Required:

  • Earned or currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in exercise science/physiology, biomedical science or a similar discipline. Candidates who are currently enrolled should complete their degree by December 31, 2024.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with human subject's research protections and HIPAA requirements
  • Experience with briefing and educating potential study volunteers and obtaining written informed consent 
  • Experience creating and maintaining study files
  • Some knowledge of military scientific practices and protocols
