The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is an internationally recognized military laboratory located in Natick, Massachusetts, with the overreaching research goal of maximizing and optimizing Warfighter health and performance. USARIEM's research is divided into three divisions: Thermal and Mountain Medicine, Military Performance, and Military Nutrition.
What will I be doing?
The US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to participate in research efforts relating to female Warfighter health and performance. These investigations will involve traveling to perform field- and laboratory-based investigations.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the fellow will gain knowledge, skills, and abilities related to exercise laboratory and field procedures, participate in study design, IRB process, data collection and analysis, and dissemination of data outcomes in verbal and written form.
Where will I be located?
These activities will be primarily on-site at USARIEM (Natick, MA).
What is the anticipated start date?
This is a full-time, 12-month appointment anticipated to begin this FALL2023. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
Appointment Length
Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by the Department of Defense (DoD). Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance.
The Institute has four divisions: Military Nutrition, Military Performance, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) in Natick, Massachusetts, is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter health and performance science and its applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, and nutrition research. Appointments will be awarded for one year and will be offered through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and are potentially renewable for up to 4 years.
Candidates should have earned a doctoral degree in exercise science, health sciences, or a closely related field with or without previous postdoctoral experience. ABDs are welcome to apply. This opportunity requires experience with human data collection and a willingness to travel for field data collection.
Highly competitive applicants will have experience and/or skills in the following:
- Experience with laboratory procedures such as venipuncture, exercise tests (e.g., VO2max, long jump, isometric pull), metabolic measurement systems, heart rate monitoring, body composition, and thermometry.
- Research experience to include statistics and scientific writing skills and be able to participate successfully in a team environment.
- US Citizenship is required.
