Description

The U.S. Army Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a summer research opportunity to learn and train under USARIEM biomechanics scientists, where our mission is to optimize Warfighter health and performance through medical research. The USARIEM biomechanics team is investigating the effects of heavy lifting and knee exoskeleton on military performance and injury risk.

What will I be doing, and why should I apply?

As military readiness is a top priority, you will join our team as an ORISE participant and conduct research on the biomechanics of potential mechanisms of injury with a focus on the spine during a heavy deadlift and the use of knee exoskeleton to improve performance and assess injury risk. This project will also expose you to the knowledge and use of biomechanics equipment such as markerless motion analysis system, markered motion capture system, EMG, and force plates used for data collection and dissemination for the biomechanics and Soldier performance community. You will also have an opportunity to participate in additional research activities ranging from study conception, data collection, analysis, and manuscript publication.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. You will also learn and be involved in the different aspects of:

  • Preparing regulatory-documents
  • Laboratory testing procedures
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Data dissemination
  • Reporting and manuscript writing
  • Conference presentation

Where will I be located?
Natick, Massachusetts

What is the anticipated start date?
USARIEM is ready to make appointments as soon as possible. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination
with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is for three months, with the option to extend, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline,
experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health
insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. For more information, visit the ORISE
Research Participation Program at the U.S. Department of Defense.

Qualifications

All applicants should currently be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in bioengineering, biomechanics, kinesiology, or a relevant field and must be able to pass a basic security clearance to obtain a common access card (the process will begin before the appointment starting date).

Highly competitive applicants will have the following:

  • Experiences in human performance research are preferred.
  • Familiarity with kinematic analyses, modeling, etc., of human movements is preferred.

The successful applicant will be required to comply with the host facility's Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) requirements, including but
not limited to COVID-19 requirements (e.g., facial covering, physical distancing, testing vaccination).
