The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care".

A research opportunity is available at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), located at Fort Sam Houston, TX. USAISR is seeking a candidate with a postdoc in Physiology or Biological Sciences. A selected candidate will have the opportunity to assist with the ongoing research in finding new modalities for treatment of non-compressible hemorrhage.  Studies will involve survival surgical experiments on small (rabbit) and large (swine) animals to assess the efficacy and safety of the novel therapies.

Appointment Length

An ORISE appointment period can be a short-term (less than 2 weeks), summer (10-12 weeks), or yearlong appointment.  Faculty appointments are generally for 10-12 weeks during the summer, but appointments during the academic year are also available. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Applicants must have received a Postdoctoral degree in Physiology or Biological Sciences within five (5) years of the desired starting date.
