The U.S. Army Garrison-Italy is offering an undergraduate level internship at their facility in Livorno, Italy.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to provide support to the Installation Safety Office by engaging in day-to-day Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) surveys and inspections. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will collaborate side-by-side with research and mission support personnel, learning the full OHS surveying process, gaining experience with equipment calibration, field research, analysis requisitions, and report writing.Other projects will involve collaborating with health and safety professionals to complete the following:
• Perform a confined space inventory audit.
• Develop visual safety aids and training materials.
• Develop personnel protective equipment and machine tool guarding guides and standard operating procedures.
• Develop analysis, research resources, then develop and ensure implementation of Traffic Safety Program.
• Develop Installation level radiation protection program.
• Research and develop courses of action for effective explosive management program.

You will participate in working groups and the SOHAC semi-annually to provide updates and visibility to senior leaders.

Where will I be located? Livorno, Italy

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAG-Italy. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USAG-Italy

U.S. Army Garrison Italy, Installation Safety Office. Responsible for the implementation the Army Safety Management System for the Installation and its interrelated/interacting functions of Safety and Occupational Health Program in the performance of protecting Army personnel, equipment, and facilities. The five core functions for the Office are: program management; training and promotion; inspections/assessments; mishap investigation reporting and analysis; and hazard analysis and countermeasures.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will be an undergraduate currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree.

Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

  • • Planning and developing methods to monitor goals and objectives
    • Developing plans for evaluation and research
    • Applying a variety of communication methods and techniques to market and promote activities
    • Identifying components of evidence based health promotion programs based on behavioral change theories; proficient in public speaking
    • Excellent customer service skills and ability to work well in a fast paced team environment
    • Collecting, compiling, analyzing, and reporting program outcomes
    • Collaborate effectively with higher headquarters and other agencies in the community
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, establish priorities and organize tasks; ability to work independently and as a team member
    • Experience working with community coalitions and strategic multi-disciplinary committees
    • At least one year of experience as volunteer or GS 05 or higher level, or equivalent civilian-sector level of expertise
