ORNL Ecophysiology Laboratory Technology Associate

Organization
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
Reference Code
ORNL20-LabTech-ESD
Description

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy, environment, and security.

The Ecosystems Science Group within the Environmental Sciences Division at ORNL is seeking a post-graduate (BS) laboratory technology associate to provide ecophysiological field and laboratory support. Our research is focused on the response of terrestrial ecosystems to climate change, including elevated atmospheric CO2, increased temperature and shifts in precipitation patterns. The primary duties will focus on direct measurements of mechanistic plant responses including foliar and woody gas exchange (photosynthesis and respiration), isotopes, phenology, chemistry, anatomy and water relations. The candidate may be expected to travel to N. Minnesota for one to two week-long seasonal measurement campaigns at our flagship experiment ‘Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Climatic and Environmental Change’ (SPRUCE; http://mnspruce.ornl.gov/). The candidate will also support other projects within the group as needed, including the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments (https://ngee-tropics.lbl.gov/) work in the Tropics, and may require foreign travel.

The position is for one year and includes full benefits including a medical plan and vacation, with potential for renewal based on performance and funding. For further information, please contact Dr. Jeff Warren (warrenjm@ornl.gov) and provide a CV, relevant school transcripts, and names of professional references. The position is available now with the expectation of being filled as soon as possible.

Travel required to field sites, including the possibility of foreign travel.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Skills:

Experience with ecophysiology techniques and equipment including: Licor 6400/6800 infrared gas analyzer, Picarro isotope analyzers, Scholander pressure chamber (leaf water potential), Walz PAM fluorescence meters, soil moisture sensors, sap flow sensors, Campbell dataloggers, pressure-volume curves, tissue sectioning and mounting, wet-chemistry lab techniques, and general lab experience.

The ideal candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated, and be able to troubleshoot problems with equipment. Some data processing and analysis will also be expected.

Living in East Tennessee:  While the opportunity to work at ORNL is an amazing experience in itself, it’s easy to overlook everything else East Tennessee has to offer if you haven’t had the opportunity to spend time here. From spending your weekends downtown at Knoxville’s farmers market, the Rhythm n’ Blooms Music Festival, or the Dogwood Arts Festival, to some of the best hiking, kayaking, and camping in the U.S., East Tennessee has something to offer everyone.

The ORNL Laboratory Technology Associate Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with DOE to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
