ORNL Reactor and Nuclear Sciences Laboratory Technology Associate
The Lab Tech will join a group that designs, builds, and operates a variety of experiments ranging from simple table-top setups to large complex systems located in enclosures. The experiments support R&D in advanced energy systems (e.g. nuclear reactors (fission), solar power, and power conversion systems) and signature ORNL capabilities (i.e. HFIR and SNS). The R&D generally focuses on component mechanical design, heat transfer, hydraulics, and advanced I&C.
The Lab Tech will perform routine tasks ranging from simple to medium in complexity under close supervision using detailed procedures. The candidate will assist and learn from full-time engineering technicians. The candidate will gain experience in start-up testing necessary to identify experimental problems, instrument calibration, troubleshooting, data acquisition, I&C configuration, part acquisition, fabrication, mechanical design, machining, and basic functions such as housekeeping and cleanliness. The Lab Tech will also interact with a range of experienced engineers and junior researchers as well as laboratory support personnel to gain knowledge in the breadth of laboratory activities. The ability to adhere to safety requirements and follow standard operating procedures is required. Activities may require kneeling/stooping, extended standing, and the use of ladders and/or elevated platforms.
An associate’s degree in a related field or a high school diploma and possession of a skill/certification relevant to the position is required.
This position calls for an individual that has a mechanical aptitude, the ability to work well in a team environment, good communication skills, attention to detail, willingness to learn, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and flexibility to changing environments.
Experience with PLCs (e.g. ladder logic), CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD, Solidworks, CREO), and/or a good mechanical aptitude with the ability to read, interpret, and comprehend machine drawings would be beneficial.
The ORNL Laboratory Technology Associate Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
