Description

An MS in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, engineering management or related discipline with experience with building energy efficiency management and projects is required.

The Residential and Commercial Energy Efficiency Research Group within the Energy and Transportation Science Division (ETSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants to work in the area of building energy efficiency and federal energy management.

The successful candidate will assist principal investigators and lead projects as part of an expanding program, focused on (1)improved energy management in existing buildings,  and (2)  third-party financing mechanisms used to implement energy-efficiency improvements in federal-government-owned buildings. The successful candidate will support the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). FEMP is under the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). We anticipate additional opportunities to work on international energy-efficiency programs. FEMP facilitates the federal government's implementation of sound, cost-effective energy management and investment practices to enhance the nation's energy security and environmental stewardship.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

The selected candidate will collaborate on research and analysis of technologies and practices for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. The assignment will involve leading projects and supporting ORNL program managers and principal investigators on FEMP programs and projects in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.  The FEMP project work will involve analyzing energy-efficiency project performance under third-party financing mechanisms, writing technical reports to summarize the results of technical assistance activities and contributing to periodic progress reports and presentations for sponsors.  This project may include providing technical assistance and advice on various buildings-related energy efficiency projects and programs for various federal agencies. Project work also may include supporting specific FEMP requests for research and analysis involving building energy efficiency across a spectrum of disciplines including technical, financial and policy related subject areas. The candidate must be able to work creatively and cooperatively as a member of an interdisciplinary research team.

Qualifications

Proficiency with Excel for engineering data reduction and analysis is essential. Experience with mechanical engineering modeling and analysis tools is highly desirable. Knowledge of building science, energy savings performance contracts, utility energy service contracts, heating and cooling technologies, and mechanical systems and controls is desired. Familiarity with numerical calculation and statistical data analysis techniques is desired.

Additional requirements include:

1. Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with manufacturing partners, sponsors, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles are required.
2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building, partnering and communications are a plus for this position.
3. Must be willing to travel. The successful candidate will be involved in meetings with DOE sponsors in Washington DC and will attend key conferences and workshops. Travel will be periodically required to visit federal facilities and industrial plants. No security clearance is required for this position.
