Polymer Synthetic Chemist Post Bachelor Position
The Chemical Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) currently has a post-bachelor position available for a polymer synthetic chemist with expertise in synthesis and characterization of polymeric materials. The post-bachelor technician will work on developing multi-component polymeric materials and polymer electrolytes for battery applications under the supervision of a staff scientist. The post-bachelor technician will especially work on synthesis and characterization of novel polymers. The projects are highly collaborative and take advantage of expertise and facilities at ORNL.
Under general supervision, the Post-Bachelor will conduct research specifically in the synthesis and characterization of novel polymers and composites.
MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Conduct synthesis of novel well-defined polymers using various polymerization techniques including controlled polymerization methods (anionic, ATRP, RAFT, ROMP) and other methods (conventional free radical, step growth)
• Conduct synthesis of novel monomers, nanoparticle synthesis, and post functionalization of polymers
• Perform composite membrane fabrications of the novel polymers.
• Characterize novel polymers and their structures using multiple techniques including GPC, DSC, FTIR, and NMR
• Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
• Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
• Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
