Description

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship (MSGI) Program provides opportunities for mathematical sciences doctoral students to participate in internships at federal national laboratories and research facilities.

What will I be doing?

The NSF Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship (MSGI) program is aimed at students who are interested in understanding the application of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques to "real world" problems, regardless of whether you plan to pursue an academic or nonacademic career. Internship activities will vary based on the assigned project and hosting facility. As part of your application, you will identify your top 3 projects from the 2020 NSF MSGI Project Catalog. You can review the catalog here: https://public.orau.org/sawd/nsf-msgi/SitePages/NSFCatalogView.aspx Additional projects may be added to the catalog on an ongoing basis until November 30, 2019.

All projects are in disciplinary areas of the mathematical sciences supported by the NSF Division of Mathematical Sciences.

  • Algebra and Number Theory
  • Analysis
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Combinatorics
  • Computational Mathematics
  • Foundations
  • Geometric Analysis
  • Mathematical Biology
  • Probability
  • Statistics
  • Topology

Applicants are encouraged to review the information about DMS research areas at https://www.nsf.gov/funding/programs.jsp?org=DMS.

How long is the internship? Where will I be?

Internship appointments are for 10 consecutive weeks on site at the assigned hosting facility between the months of May and September. For a list of hosting facilities, please visit: https://orise.orau.gov/nsf-msgi/.

The Benefits:

You will receive a stipend of $1,200 per week during the 10-week internship period. Transportation expenses for round trip travel costs up to $2,000 between the participant's U.S. residence and the assigned internship location will be provided to participants who live more than 50 miles from the hosting facility.

Nature of Appointment

Participants will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, NSF or any other office or agency.  Participants will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE letter of appointment and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

You must meet the following to be eligible for an internship:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time graduate student during the 2019-2020 academic year at an accredited U.S. college pursuing a doctoral degree in mathematics, statistics or applied mathematics.
  • Have a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale at the time of application.

Additional Information:

  • U.S. citizenship is not required for participation in the program.  However, depending on the internship assignment, U.S. citizenship or permanent residence may be required.  For non-U.S. citizens, internships are contingent upon having a valid immigration status. ORISE will work with participants to determine eligibility.
  • Candidates selected for an internship appointment will be required to provide proof of enrollment for Spring 2020.
  • Students graduating with a doctoral degree prior to Spring 2020 are not eligible to participate.
  • Participants are required to have health insurance coverage during the internship period and provide proof of coverage prior to the start of the internship.

A complete application consists of:

  • All required fields within the applicant information and application including answers to questions specific to the NSF-MSGI program.  You must select at least one project.
  • Academic records showing the equivalent of at least one year of full-time graduate school attendance prior to Fall 2019. For students in the first year of graduate school, academic transcript of the undergraduate degree including the last year of courses, degree, and date the degree was awarded must be provided instead. Unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted and must include the name of the academic institution, name of the student, completed coursework, and grades.
  • Proof of full-time enrollment and courses taken during the Fall 2019 term. If this information is missing from your transcript/academic record, then you must provide separate documentation.
  • Minimum of two relevant letters of recommendation. These letters should address your academic record and potential for success in this internship.
