A research opportunity is available at the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC), within the National Library of Medicine (NLM), at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) located in Bethesda, Maryland.
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world's largest medical library and a leader in medical informatics research. NLM's on-line information resources are authoritative, comprehensive, up-to-date, and largely free and available via social media, and many involve on-going research and development.
This project is within NLM's Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC), which conducts R&D in biomedical informatics and the use of advanced communications and computing technologies to improve how NLM brings clinical data and health information to consumers, health care providers, and researchers. LHNCBC research projects are organized in six research areas:
- Clinical Data Standards & Electronic Medical Records
- Collaboration Technologies & Mobile Health Applications
- Document Processing
- Health Information Resources
- Image Processing & Visualization
- Natural Language Processing
Participants can be involved with on on-going research projects in any of these research areas under the guidance of LHNCBC research staff preceptors.
Learning objectives of this project include:
- Learning about the medical information resources that NIH and NLM provide today and about the motivations and challenges in current LHNCBC and Clinical Center biomedical informatics research, through the project's lecture series
- Studying the purpose, design, operation, and effectiveness of representative biomedical informatics applications
- Exploring enabling technologies that can impact the development and use of future biomedical information systems
- Gaining experience in independent study and research under the guidance of LHNCBC and Clinical Center staff
- Describing study and research results in writing and presentations and improving written work and presentations through critiques with other participants in the project
- Becoming aware of research funding and professional development opportunities for physicians specializing in biomedical informatics, including through discussions with leading biomedical informatics practitioners and researchers
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of NLM contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at NLM in the Bethesda, MD, area. Participants do not become employees of NIH, NLM, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Qualified candidates must be enrolled in an accredited medical or dental school.
Preferred skills:
- Some experience with computing and information systems, including programming, in clinical medicine or clinical research
- Previous computer science and/or computer engineering education may be helpful
