The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is offering research opportunities for college students and postgraduates to participate in research projects and developmental activities at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in Bethesda, Maryland. Participants will have the opportunity to add their perspective and academic expertise to innovative research in projects related to the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders while learning from and collaborating with a highly skilled team of NIH/NHLBI staff and researchers in a unique laboratory setting. Opportunities are available for a variety of NHLBI focus areas.
Participant Benefits
You will receive a competitive monthly stipend for living and other expenses, as determined by the NIH. Stipends are typically based on academic level, discipline, and experience. You may also be eligible to receive a health insurance allowance, reimbursement of travel/training, and/or a relocation allowance, determined on a case-by-case basis.
Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program, and may be purchased through ORAU health insurance plan.
Appointment Length
The initial appointment is typically full-time for up to one year. Appointments may be renewed annually up to four additional years upon recommendation of NIH/NHLBI, contingent on the availability of funds. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidates.
Nature of the Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, NIH, NHLBI or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Opportunities may be available to students, postgraduates with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, and faculty.
The ideal candidates would have superior academic performance, strong analytical, organizational, research and communication (oral and written) skills, and demonstrated capacity for creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Candidates should be a strong team player who performs equally well independently.
A completed application consists of:
- Completed Zintellect profile
- Current Resume/CV, including academic history, employment history, relevant experiences, and publication list
- Academic Records - The applicant must submit records for the most recent degree or degree in progress. Unofficial transcripts or copies of academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted. Academic Records must include name of the academic institution, name of the student, courses completed/in progress, grades and degree expected/awarded.
- One professional recommendation - Applicants are required to provide contact information for at least one recommendation in order to submit the application. You are encouraged to request a recommendation from a professional who can speak to your abilities and potential for success as well as your scientific capabilities and personal characteristics. Recommendation requests must be sent through the Zintellect application system. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation in Zintellect. Recommendations submitted via email will not be accepted. Recommendation must be submitted before an offer is made.
All documents must be submitted via Zintellect. Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system. All documents must be in English or include an official English translation.
