The National Center for Biomedical Information (NCBI) is a division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).   NCBI is seeking applicants for the Intramural Research Program

About NCBI

NCBI's mission is to develop new information technologies to aid in the understanding of fundamental molecular and genetic processes that control health and disease. More specifically, the NCBI has been charged with creating automated systems for storing and analyzing knowledge about molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics; facilitating the use of such databases and software by the research and medical community; coordinating efforts to gather biotechnology information both nationally and internationally; and performing research into advanced methods of computer-based information processing for analyzing the structure and function of biologically important molecules.

About NLM

NLM is the world's largest medical library and a leader in medical informatics and computational biology research. The program directs its efforts toward two broad areas of computational biomedical sciences: 1) computational biology, using biological data to advance algorithms and models to better comprehend biological systems and to connect relationships between any level of biological organization; and 2) computational health sciences, focusing on clinical information processing, including new computational methods for clinical data and health data standards.

Projects within NLM are organized into six research areas:

• Evolutionary Genomics and Biomolecular Structure

• Health Information Standards and Discovery

• Image Processing

• Natural Language Processing

• Networks, Gene Regulation, and Chromatin

• Statistical Methods

Participants can be involved with on-going research projects in any of these research areas under the guidance of research staff.   

Learning objectives include:

• Gaining experience in independent study and research under the guidance of LHNCBC and NCBI staff

• Learning about the biomedical resources that NIH, NLM and NCBI currently provide and about the motivations and challenges in current LHNCBC and NCBI research through seminars, workshops, and lectures

• Describing study and research results through written and oral communication and improving written research and presentations through critiques with other project participants

• Participating in training and career development opportunities offered through NLM’s Training Office and the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education

• Collaborating on research projects with other NIH intramural research laboratories as well as extramural academic groups

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidates.

Benefits

You will receive a competitive stipend for living and other expenses as determined by the NIH. Stipends are typically based on academic level, discipline, and experience. You may also be eligible to receive a health insurance allowance and reimbursement for travel and training expenses.

In response to the evolving situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hosting facility may modify their operation schedule and access to facilities to ensure the health and safety of their entire workforce while maintaining operational effectiveness. Hence, the appointment location is subject to change and contingent on hosting site guidelines and may result in a virtual placement.

Nature of the Appointment

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and NLM.  The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, NIH, NLM, LHNCBC, NCBI or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Preferred skills:

• Strong background in biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field

• Some experience with computing and information systems, including programming

• Previous computer science and/or computer engineering education may be helpful

Requirements:

The fellowship is open to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral graduates who have received their degree within the last five years, or who are currently pursuing their degree, in a related field.  If more than five years since receipt of degree, applicant must have an academic background and experience in a relevant field and must be seeking to gain new knowledge/experience in order to expand career opportunities or to advance professionally.
