Research Participation Programs at the NIH are educational and training programs designed to provide college students, recent graduates, and postdoctoral Fellows an opportunity to participate in project-specific NIH research, current public health research, and developmental activities.  It is an opportunity to network with world-class scientists using state-of-the-art equipment and to expand students’ knowledge in their field of study while exposing them to new areas of basic and applied research. Participants interact daily with assigned mentors who guide research activities during the internship.  These research activities help transition classroom theory into hands-on experience, helping provide answers to today’s pressing scientific questions.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and NIH. Appointments can vary from three months to one year and be renewed upon recommendation of NIH, contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointments are at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, as well as other NIH locations. Participants do not become employees of NIH, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. 

Eligibility

Because of the educational nature of these programs, participants must fall into one of the following categories:

• Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in a STEM discipline, or a related public health discipline (such as economics or health communications).
• Have received such a degree within five years of the start date of the appointment.
• Other applicants, including established scientists, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Benefits

• Stipend – Stipends are awarded monthly.
• Insurance – Insurance is a program requirement for the Research Participation Program. Insurance can be purchased through the ORISE Program.
• Inbound/Outbound Travel – Awarded on a case-by-case basis.

Nature of the Appointment

Participants will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, NIH, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

To be eligible candidates must fall into one of the following categories:

• Postgraduate: Have received an associate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree in an appropriate discipline within five years of the desired starting date.
• Undergraduate or Graduate Students: Be enrolled in an accredited U.S. college, university, technical institute, or pre-college school, or in an institution approved by the NIH.

This program is available to U.S. citizens, Legal Permanent Residents, and foreign nationals. Note that some projects may require U.S. citizenship for security reasons.
