Description

The Viral Diseases Branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research is offering an ORISE physician research opportunity in clinical vaccine development for epidemic viruses. The WRAIR VDB has a decades-long history in viral vaccine development, including the development of multiple FDA-licensed products, and a network of global collaborators. The pathogens studied at the WRAIR VDB include dengue, chikungunya, Zika, adenoviruses, influenza, and SARS-CoV2. In addition to engagement in clinical trial design and conduct, the WRAIR VDB has robust laboratory capabilities, including immunology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.

The candidate will engage in the design and conduct of a range of Phase I/II vaccine clinical trials, including those pertaining to dengue, Zika, COVID19, and chikungunya. Under the guidance of the mentor, the participant will contribute to interdisciplinary scientific studies that leverage these clinical trials, including identifying vaccine correlates of protection. The candidate will also participate in epidemiological studies that identify the burden, risk factors, and correlates of protection of these and other emerging and re-emerging respiratory and vector-borne viruses. This research opportunity will allow the candidate to gain broad expertise in viral vaccine development for emerging RNA viruses.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

*Required: US licensed physician with eligibility to practice in the State of Maryland
*Required: Candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.
*Required: A minimum of one year of research experience in the field of infectious diseases. This period can include the completion of an MPH, PhD or the research requirements of a clinical residency/fellowship program.

*Desirable: Research experience in the field of viral pathogens, including clinical microbiology, epidemiology and/or clinical trial studies. This period can include the completion of an MPH, PhD, or the research requirements of a clinical residency/fellowship program.
*Desirable: Board certification in internal medicine, infectious diseases or preventive medicine
