Description

Research Topic Description, including Problem Statement:

Various determinants have been developed to identify technological innovation. While conclusive predictors remain elusive, some indicators serve to enlighten. Financial determinants remain an area for further development. Although expenditures measure a level of input, the measurable relation to output, for example patents or profit, has been shown to vary under different circumstances. This research seeks to pursue further detail in the nature of financial support leading to technological innovation. How do differences in technological innovation emerge from differences in financial support?

Example Approaches:

Develop models showing differences in technological innovation from different financial sources, such as government or private sources; explore different outcomes from different types of recipients, such as universities, labs, or businesses; explore different outcomes from similar types of funding sources but within different contexts (such as different countries, different economic environments, or different market structures).

Relevance to the Intelligence Community:

- Develop/enhance understanding of global technology development lifecycles and
transition plans
- Develop/enhance capabilities to collect information on global science and technology
activities.
- Develop/enhance capabilities to forecast global technological advances.
- Develop/enhance methods to aggregate, analyze, and/or share financial data.
- Develop/enhance capabilities and/or methods to aggregate and analyze economic data.

Key Words: Financial determinants, technology, innovation, disruptive innovation
