A research fellowship opportunity is currently available in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), in Washington, DC.
An ORISE Fellow will be involved on the intersections of HIV and Viral Hepatitis (VH) in minority communities.
The Fellow will be mentored by the Viral Hepatitis Policy Advisor (principal mentor) and would:
- Providing literature research to identify and develop available data related to HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C co-infection and estimates of co-infection among specific populations, including people with substance use disorders.
- Identifing effective strategies to test, manage, and cure co-infected individuals as well as prevent viral hepatitis infections in people living with HIV; develop, refine, and disseminate key communication on HIV/VH via blogs and other social media.
- Assisting in the implementation and monitoring-related activities of the Secretary's Minority AIDS Initiative (SMAIF) co-infection projects, including the two Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) led demonstration projects.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Washington DC area. Participants do not become employees of HHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
- A successful candidate should have a masters or terminal-level degree encompassing a variety of general public health subjects (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, sociology, and health systems) with preference given to those with academic concentrations involving aspects of population-based infectious diseases (e.g., HIV and Hepatitis) and/or substance abuse prevention and treatment within the last five years.
