Description

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Research Participation Programs at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are educational and training programs designed to provide students and recent graduates opportunities to participate in project-specific HHS research and developmental activities at HHS facilities that are related to HHS's mission. Opportunities include full-time, part-time, and summer appointments.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. Initial appointments can vary from three months to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointments are at HHS in Washington, DC, as well as other HHS locations. Participants do not become employees of HHS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

Applicants must be enrolled as an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral student at an accredited U.S. college or university pursuing a degree in a STEM discipline or have received an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral degree within five years of the start date of the appointment.

New participants who have a bachelor's degree at the start of the appointment will be limited to a total of five years of participation calculated from the original appointment start date. Undergraduate students may be in the program for a total of four years while obtaining a bachelor's degree. The four-year maximum will be calculated from the original undergraduate appointment start date, inclusive of breaks in appointment. Once the bachelor's degree is conferred, the individual is eligible for up to five additional years calculated from the new post-bachelor's appointment start date, inclusive of breaks in appointment.
