A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Division of Microbiology at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Jefferson Laboratories Campus located in Jefferson, Arkansas.

Research efforts will include participation in multi-disciplinary efforts in a nationally recognized training program in support of the FDA’s mission. With the help of a mentor, the selected candidate will collaborate on studies to assess the effects of FDA relevant xenobiotic compounds on the gastrointestinal tract.  A major focus of this effort will be working on in vivo, in vitro and ex vivo models of gastrointestinal tract to assess the effects of the test compound on gut microbiota, intestinal permeability and gut associated immune responses.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA-NCTR in the Jefferson, Arkansas, area. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Applicant must have received a Masters degree within the last five year, preferably in the field of Microbiology, Immunology, Cellular and Molecular Biology or related areas

Additional experience with Bioinformatics data analysis is preferred and prior experience on animal experiments is desired, especially on processing intestinal samples harvested from animals; and experience on cell culture, as well as developing and performing assays to evaluate the potential toxicity of FDA relevant xenobiotic compounds.
