Description

The EPA Environmental Research and Business Support Program has an immediate part time (up to 20 hours per week) opening for a Science Communications Specialist with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

What the EPA project is about

The Atlantic Ecology Division (AED) is a standalone division within the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory of the Office of Research and Development, and is located in Narragansett, Rhode Island.  Research at the AED focuses on ecological effects of human activities on coastal waters and watersheds of the Atlantic seaboard, with particular emphasis on effects of these activities on populations of fish, shellfish, and aquatic-dependent wildlife.

What you will be doing

As a member of this team you will get to interact with Division’s Associate Director of Program Operations and receive additional guidance from Technical Information Manager and Division Directors.  You will work with research staff to develop communication products for distribution to local, regional, and national outlets, including the local URI Bay Campus community, and outreach activities with other local academic institutions.

Required skills

The selected candidate will have:

  • Demonstrate education and/or experience in environmental science or related fields.

  • Demonstrate skills and have experience working in teams.

  • Possess strong written, oral and electronic communication skills.

How you will apply your skills

  • Providing assistance in identifying, writing and editing science related communications materials including news releases, fact sheets, newsletter articles, web content, talking points, brochures and displays.

  • Providing assistance in creating, reviewing and updating AED's online media sources including Internet and Intranet; with future development of blogs, Wikis, podcasts and social media (such as twitter and Facebook).

  • Providing assistance with electronic media services such as taking photos and video to post online and for other communication materials.

Location: This job will be located at EPA’s facility in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $19.65 for hours worked.

Hours: Part-time/20 hours per week, Mon-Fri.

Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Expected start date: The position is part-time, up to 20 hours/week, and expected to begin in May 2019. The selected applicant will be a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial contract period is through May 14, 2020.

Working conditions: The selected candidate shall be supervised by a mentor who will provide day-to-day direction, as well as coach, advise and counsel the candidate, and review his/her work.  The mentor for this position will be a federal EPA employee. 

Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years of age, and

  • Be a current student with who has at least two or more years of college coursework in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, Physical Science, Communications, or closely related field from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months, and

  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
