The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time Environmental Analyst position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Athens, GA.

The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.

What the EPA project is about

Within ORD, the Center for Environmental Measurement & Modeling (CEMM) conducts research to advance EPA’s ability to measure and model contaminants in the environment, including research to provide fundamental methods and models needed to implement environmental statutes. The methods and models developed by CEMM are typically applied at the airshed, watershed and ecosystem level.  Within CEMM, the Ecosystem Processes Division (EPD) develops methods and models to characterize the transport and transformation of chemicals and other stressors in ecosystems. CEMM/EPD scientists.  CEMM scientists Conduct laboratory, field, and computational research to better understand how environmental processes and ecosystem conditions impact fate and transport of chemical and non-chemical stressors.  They also Support the implementation of environmental statutes including the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the Clean Water Act (CWA), the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund), and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).

EPD is also responsible for developing innovative software tools for evaluating water quantity and quality.  As part of this effort, EPD is conducting a research project focusing on the development of a state-of-the-art component-based watershed modeling system which can be used to compose workflows to assess water quantity and quality as they relate to exposure.

What experience and skills will you gain?

As a team member, you will work with an EPD mentor as part of a multi-disciplinary research team and provide technical support for collection and analysis of environmental data leading to the development of microbial exposure assessment in several geographical areas.  The anticipated focus for this work includes development and documentation of microbial exposure maps.

How you will apply your skills

Research Activities

• Gather and interpret data on urban landscape features.

• Perform operations on relevant geospatial datasets.

• Develop and implement algorithms for inverse distance weighting and the creation of heat maps that describe potential microbial exposure.

• Document research activities and results in a final project report.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

• Demonstrated education and/or experience in one of following GIS software: ArcGIS, QGIS, or Leaflet; and

• Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills.

Location:  This job will be located EPA’s facility in Athens, GA.

Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $21.80 for hours worked.

Hours: Full-time.

Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Expected start date: The position is full time and expected to begin September 2021. The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial project is through May 14, 2022, with up to 3 additional option periods.
